The first listing in the search results are usually not the best. These designers usually have too much work and won’t do a quality job on your site. Your job will more than likely be passed down to a subcontractor, whom then contracts your site yet again to another subcontractor. Like a VHS tape that keeps being played over and over, the quality will degrade.
Study a webdesigner’s portfolio. Do all the sites look the same? Does it appear they are using a cookie-cutter template to quickly develop sites? Look for a decent range in artistic layouts. This shows that the designer is actually taking the time to develop each project uniquely.
Is the webdesigner also available via phone? Quite a lot of designers only put their email addresses up as a form of contact. This usually means the designer has a part time or full time job elsewhere or is too busy to answer your calls.
Try emailing the potential designer and testing out his response times. A designer that gets back to you a full day late is often not reliable.
